This does seem to be a popular thread...LOL

webmaster wrote:This is a great thread - been watching it for awhile now. Amazing pics. Well done.
:)
Thanks :D,

Oh and by the way...There's more 8).

READ THIS ENTIRE POST PLEASE

I promise you that this tree has come too far and been through too much to be skimmed over as though it were just another tree on your street.

I have posted this on this site before but it was buried long ago, So...

Training started on this Japanese White Pine in 1625, That's over 380 years old.

It is about five feet high and four feet wide with a trunk caliper of ten inches.

In 1976 it was donated by Masaru Yamaki as part of Japans Bicentennial Gift to the American people.

Mr. Yamakis family had run a commercial bonsai nursery for generations in Japan and this tree is still the oldest bonsai in the Japanese Bonsai Collection at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum in Washington DC.

One other thing you may find notable is that this tree survived being 3 kilometers [under 2 miles] away from the detonation at 8:15 in the morning of August 6, 1945.

BTW, Detonation refers to the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan.

You read that right, After all of this: Masaru Yamaki gave his most treasured tree to our country as a birthday present.

Here is an interesting story about his grandsons coming to America to see the tree for the first time.
[They were not born yet when it was given to us by their grandfather.]

It is a moving story to say the least.

Enjoy :D

I am glad your enjoying this thread Very Happy Cool Very Happy [Often I am not entirely sure anybody looks at this...Laughing
Well you can always count on atleast one person looking at it...me :D .
Yeah, it gives me mixed emotions that vary from wanting to kick all my trees off of the patio while muttering :"I will never be able to see like that!"
To staggering feelings of awe that require both hands to pick my jaw up off of the desk...And all sorts of combinations thereof... Very Happy
I have the exact same feelings. I look at those trees before he begins and think...is he crazy those are useless  , then I am in awe of what he does with them.

As for the AMAZING white pine from Japan, I found that tree in my research a long time ago. There was a whole article on it. What a gift from Mr. Yamaki. As I sit here and type this, I am looking at the tree below and if you scroll up a little so the pot is hidden then the tree looks like a MONSTER, beautiful ramification. Try it :D .

Ynot,

Certainly an impressive tree and an amazing story as well. I am watching "The last Samurai" as I type this. I am not usually one to dwell on the philosophical nature of bonsai but occasionally something just cuts through my stubbornness and brings home that in the right hands bonsai can be more than just a tree in a pot.

Thanks for keeping this thread going.

I do know what you mean Gnome, In this case it just happened to be a tree that was the gift that exemplified a wonderful example of a human being being giving.....

On Occasion I think of things that I thought I had already posted to this thread...[Some of you have seen this before as I know I have posted this here previously but again...It is long buried.]

Exhibit A:

Let Doug Philips inspire you with his full on take no prisoners approach to Olive bonsai. At the bottom of that page, 'Take the tour'.

For those of you that have not done much pruning: Fasten your seatbelt, This is your only warning. :P.

Notice Dougs use of multiple chops, & Rootpruning in the development of these trees. Peek at his soil and grow boxes as well.

Next, Check out the Trident Maple Fusing Projects, Individual tree tours are at the bottom of the page.

Hope you enjoy these :D.

You were right about the olive tree  It always amazes me to see how really any tree can recover from such a harsh pruning, or in this case, *chainsawing* :D

:shock::?::shock:

Not even close Joe.

It's entirely inaccurate to say 'really any tree' can survive this at all...

How you can extrapolate what happened to this tree into a huge general statement like that is beyond me.

Make sure to click on the individual trees on the Mame page as some of them are actual size [Or bigger] when you see them on the moniter..8).

The sizes are listed for some of these, Keep in mind that Bonsai are measured from the soil up.

If you happen to not be metric-friendly 30cm=12 inches.

Enjoy these little treasures, :D

EDIT:I will reply to Joes following post in the edit below- I am not going to take five posts to explain this though.
Not this specific example, meaning, trees just seem to take any opportunity they can to survive.
:?: This specific example is what you referenced. This makes no sense whatsoever.... I give up.
Take, for example, when people prune back a tree so it doesn't lean over their property, power lines, ex. sometimes, half of the branches, or all are cut, and the tree survives.
That's simply not relevant to the specific procedure about which you stated "really any tree can recover from" Which I corrected.

I give up.
Let me just say I think that olive tree recovery was amazing. I didn't know it could take a chopping like that. guess you learn something new everday :) . We'll just leave it at that.

You certainly did buy yourself some time, I'm only on the fourth link and I will have to resume my viewing tommorow, its time for bed, long week.

Suthin Sukosolvisit: A bonsai artist for nearly forty years and a renown teacher, Inspiring stuff indeed.

Though the progression photos are sporadic, His results are undeniable 8). The ramification on the maples is fantastic IMO.:!:

See some progressions in his gallery.

Excellent work from Paul Pikel:

He does a great job documenting and explaining the process along the way.

There is much to be learned here :D.

IE: That is... If your interested in seeing how this 25 YO Chinese Elm:

Is transformed from this...

To this, In less than five years 8)....

I will give you another example to further whet your appetite. 8)

Give Paul three years & a Ficus Salicifolia {That has potential ;), Also note that he lives in Florida so this tree loves his climate.}

...And it goes from this:

To this:

By the way: This tree is only 5" high from the soil to the apex 8), Just a bit bigger than a CD. It is literally barely bigger than it appears in the picture.

He works on some bigger stock also...

To see more [15 trees w/ progression photos] click on the top link here. [No direct link is available for some reason.]

Do check out his 'New Projects' section of his website also.

Enjoy 8).

Thanks, once again, for the great pics :D :D 8) .

I just wanted to point out that in the gallery of Suthin Sukosolvisit, the trident #2 has what I would call the definition of a scrifice branch, I have seen no other picture that clearly illustrates what a sacrifice branch really looks like.

Excellent, It's awesome to get feedback involving a bit of inspiration jumping out at someone 8), It feels good to spread the joy you know :D.

These are from the photo galleries of shows from the Cardiff Bonsai Club [Which Tarian will soon be a member of :)]

I thought these might give a good look at what a show is like.
[Though on a personal note I prefer the table displays as I find the curvy modern stands kind of distracting.]

Still, I think the pictures will hold some interest.

I don't like the stands either, I think they draw too much focus away from the Bonsai.

I have been saving these for a while but the time has come....;)

Here are what I suspect will be the two longest lasting trees of this entire thread.

With proper care {Very easy in this case!} These will literally last over a thousand years! :D 8) {Perhaps it is that inorganic soil ;)}

To maintain continuity in this thread: I ask that any comments about this post be PMed to me and I will assemble them into a single post here if you wish them to be added {Let me know}.
That way anyone visiting this thread doesn't need to scroll through a ton of comments to get to the pics - Know what I mean? ~ Thanks.

Here are a few of the photos I took [Sorry about the lighting/ general quality of the pictures - Mother Nature was not being very cooperative & the other half is my fault  .]

Hey ynot great pics. I really have to get down there one day and see them in person. In the 47th pic. is that tree planted on a rock or is that the trunk?

Also two below that, what species is that tree it looks like a bald cypress with moss growing on the sides, it looks great.

Tom

P.S. Sorry I haven't posted in a while, I've kinda been taking a break from bonsai leaving my trees to grow as they please. Being that most of my projects are in there beginning stages I kinda just have to forget about them for a while or I'll go crazy over how long they take to progress. Anyways I'm back and hope to be posting a little more often now.

It is the trunk...And nothing but 8).

As I recall it is a Cypress of some sort. I was initially taking pictures of the placards for each tree also but it was taking up too much space on my camera....:(;)

Nice to see you around :D, I am kind of a scarce commodity myself as I am quite busy with work...So, I empathise.

Glad you liked the pics 8).

Time to revive this tread. Here are some pics from the Philadelphia Flower Show this year. If you have any questions on any of the trees ask and I'll do my best to answer.

Enjoy...

The forest is composed of Zelkova's and the two large dormant ones are tridents. For perspective, the second one's base was pushing two feet!

Sorry about the quality, I'm not such a great photographer plus I didn't realize the camera was on the wrong setting.

Great link Tom - after I see his amazing trees, I feel like I should give up! None of my things are even close to being like those - I doubt if they ever will be...

alisios,

I find many people say that same thing, that their trees will never look like that of great artists. I find this is because beginners, not excluding me, start with nursery trees and other material that will take many years to develop. I'm not saying this is a bad thing because this is when you learn how to take care of your trees and which species you like best.

What I have come to realize is that it is better to spend the time and or money to find quality material that will give you immediate gratification. This means one with a developed nebari and trunk. Basically a blank canvas on which you can work on. The branch placement and style of the overall tree is now up to you but the results will come much faster because the hard and time consuming part it done for you.

So far I only have one of these but it is extremely satisfying. I'm not saying I don't snoop around local nursery's for material but it has made me more picky about what I decide to purchase. Right now I will be saving my money to purchase more stock like this. I have plenty of other trees that will keep me busy for years to come and I'm sure they will be gratifying in the end.

One other thing that I have done is I've begun to limit my purchases to trees that I know thrive in my area and really appeal to me. I have, for too long, purchased trees just for the species and the fact that I've seen them as great examples in photo gallerys. This limitation will make it much easier to take care of my collection. I can now, well in the future, focus on developing my trees instead of worrying if they will survive or not.

Now these idea's haven't all been put into full affect but the thoughts and ideas are there and I can only grow from here. I hope this can help you in some way as this has turned into a bit of an essay. This may not be clear to you at first but if you can work at it, you can be saved the endless frustration that I've gone through. Now if only I can get some cuttings to root  .
