Thanks for all the links once again you deliver :D . I have to say in the first link the windswept pine really catches my attention, it is a very convincing scene to me. I'm no sure if the pic was streched or not be is seems like a very long low tree I love it :D .

You certainly did buy yourself some time, I'm only on the fourth link and I will have to resume my viewing tommorow, its time for bed, long week.

Thanks again :D .

Suthin Sukosolvisit: A bonsai artist for nearly forty years and a renown teacher, Inspiring stuff indeed.

Though the progression photos are sporadic, His results are undeniable 8). The ramification on the maples is fantastic IMO.:!:

See some progressions in his gallery.

Excellent work from Paul Pikel:

He does a great job documenting and explaining the process along the way.

There is much to be learned here :D.

IE: That is... If your interested in seeing how this 25 YO Chinese Elm:

Is transformed from this...

To this, In less than five years 8)....

I will give you another example to further whet your appetite. 8)

Give Paul three years & a Ficus Salicifolia {That has potential ;), Also note that he lives in Florida so this tree loves his climate.}

...And it goes from this:

To this:

By the way: This tree is only 5" high from the soil to the apex 8), Just a bit bigger than a CD. It is literally barely bigger than it appears in the picture.

He works on some bigger stock also...

To see more [15 trees w/ progression photos] click on the top link here. [No direct link is available for some reason.]

Do check out his 'New Projects' section of his website also.

Enjoy 8).

Thanks, once again, for the great pics :D :D 8) .

I just wanted to point out that in the gallery of Suthin Sukosolvisit, the trident #2 has what I would call the definition of a scrifice branch, I have seen no other picture that clearly illustrates what a sacrifice branch really looks like.

Excellent, It's awesome to get feedback involving a bit of inspiration jumping out at someone 8), It feels good to spread the joy you know :D.

These are from the photo galleries of shows from the Cardiff Bonsai Club [Which Tarian will soon be a member of :)]

I thought these might give a good look at what a show is like.
[Though on a personal note I prefer the table displays as I find the curvy modern stands kind of distracting.]

Still, I think the pictures will hold some interest.

I don't like the stands either, I think they draw too much focus away from the Bonsai.

I have been saving these for a while but the time has come....;)

Here are what I suspect will be the two longest lasting trees of this entire thread.

With proper care {Very easy in this case!} These will literally last over a thousand years! :D 8) {Perhaps it is that inorganic soil ;)}

To maintain continuity in this thread: I ask that any comments about this post be PMed to me and I will assemble them into a single post here if you wish them to be added {Let me know}.
That way anyone visiting this thread doesn't need to scroll through a ton of comments to get to the pics - Know what I mean? ~ Thanks.

I was lucky enough to be in Washington D.C. this weekend and managed to duck into the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum at the National Arboretum. 8).

Here are a few of the photos I took [Sorry about the lighting/ general quality of the pictures - Mother Nature was not being very cooperative & the other half is my fault  .]

Hey ynot great pics. I really have to get down there one day and see them in person. In the 47th pic. is that tree planted on a rock or is that the trunk?

Also two below that, what species is that tree it looks like a bald cypress with moss growing on the sides, it looks great.

Tom

P.S. Sorry I haven't posted in a while, I've kinda been taking a break from bonsai leaving my trees to grow as they please. Being that most of my projects are in there beginning stages I kinda just have to forget about them for a while or I'll go crazy over how long they take to progress. Anyways I'm back and hope to be posting a little more often now.

As I recall it is a Cypress of some sort. I was initially taking pictures of the placards for each tree also but it was taking up too much space on my camera....:(;)

Nice to see you around :D, I am kind of a scarce commodity myself as I am quite busy with work...So, I empathise.

Glad you liked the pics 8).

Time to revive this tread. Here are some pics from the Philadelphia Flower Show this year. If you have any questions on any of the trees ask and I'll do my best to answer.

Enjoy...

The forest is composed of Zelkova's and the two large dormant ones are tridents. For perspective, the second one's base was pushing two feet!

Sorry about the quality, I'm not such a great photographer plus I didn't realize the camera was on the wrong setting.

Great link Tom - after I see his amazing trees, I feel like I should give up! None of my things are even close to being like those - I doubt if they ever will be...

alisios,

I find many people say that same thing, that their trees will never look like that of great artists. I find this is because beginners, not excluding me, start with nursery trees and other material that will take many years to develop. I'm not saying this is a bad thing because this is when you learn how to take care of your trees and which species you like best.

What I have come to realize is that it is better to spend the time and or money to find quality material that will give you immediate gratification. This means one with a developed nebari and trunk. Basically a blank canvas on which you can work on. The branch placement and style of the overall tree is now up to you but the results will come much faster because the hard and time consuming part it done for you.

So far I only have one of these but it is extremely satisfying. I'm not saying I don't snoop around local nursery's for material but it has made me more picky about what I decide to purchase. Right now I will be saving my money to purchase more stock like this. I have plenty of other trees that will keep me busy for years to come and I'm sure they will be gratifying in the end.

One other thing that I have done is I've begun to limit my purchases to trees that I know thrive in my area and really appeal to me. I have, for too long, purchased trees just for the species and the fact that I've seen them as great examples in photo gallerys. This limitation will make it much easier to take care of my collection. I can now, well in the future, focus on developing my trees instead of worrying if they will survive or not.

Now these idea's haven't all been put into full affect but the thoughts and ideas are there and I can only grow from here. I hope this can help you in some way as this has turned into a bit of an essay. This may not be clear to you at first but if you can work at it, you can be saved the endless frustration that I've gone through. Now if only I can get some cuttings to root  .

Arguably THE most famous American Bonsai is a forest.

It is called 'Goshin' and was designed by John Naka [The author of the bonsai bibles 'Bonsai Techniques' Vol. I & II]

These trees were first worked by Naka-San in 1953. This short history of Goshin is easily worth 3 minutes of your time and completely painless. 8) https://www.bonsai-nbf.org/nbf/goshinhistory.html
In 1969, Six years after it was first assembled.

Ah Yes. I recently went to the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum at the Natonal Arboretum. I saw this one one and fell in love with it. Truly inspirtional. You really need to go see it in real life if you can. I live 50 minutes away so I go as often as I can. I'm also a member of the National Bonsai Foundation. BUT, The one that I thought was the MOST remarkable was the one that has been in captivity since 1609 or something ancient like that. It survived HIROSHIMA!!!!!!!

The drive into DC comeing from the north or west goes MD-US 50 to Interstate 395. Part of that drive is on NY Ave. in the district. You drive past the National Arboratum every time on that route.

Stop in sometime, you'll be pleasantly suprised and its free!.
