covering compost
so my compost pile along with piles of topsoil and ammended soil are right next to a heavily wooded area. to keep the woods from overgrowing them or weeds from taking over the piles I have been covering them with black plastic. however I feel like the piles are drying out with the plastic cover. any ideas on what I could cover them with that would let the rain water in but keep the woods and weeds out?

Mulch? Leaves, grass clippings, wood chips. If weeds start they are easy to pull out.
I would use compost soon and not save it for long periods. It does its best when fresh and only gets smaller as time goes on. Frankly I'd be more worried about tree roots robbing the compost pile from below. If you leave it more than half a season, you may find it's full of fine fibrous tree roots gobbling up the goodies.
