Is it ok not to cover my compost bin?

Well I have this compost bin in my backyard and it doesn't have a cover, is that ok?

It's ok if you don't have too many critters in your yard: mice, woodchucks, raccoons, etc-- or whatever the Philippine equivalents of those are. If you do, they will eat all your compostables before they get to compost, unless you cover it.

We have mice in the Philippines but I seldom see one in my yard, but there are a lot of birds and frogs-are they considered harmful for my compost bin? And I saw a centipede and black ants in my compost.

It's OK to leave the bin uncovered but, I find it helpful to do so. During the rainy season the cover keeps my bin from getting too wet. Otherwise it helps keep my bin from drying out in the sun.

yes you're right, but what will happen if they get too wet? Is that something I should worry about?

Not that much will happen.

If the bin gets too wet, it will get soggy and air won't get in and the process will slow down. Maybe it gets a little stinky. Wait awhile longer and it will still compost.

If things get dry, wait awhile and things will eventually compost.

Don't fret. It will all rot into compost. It just might take a little longer to do so without a cover.

Not all my bins have covers. I still get compost. Some just take longer.

If you do not cover it the Compost Police will arrest you and sentence you to hard labor turning everyone else's compost piles.

Kidding! :P

Oh, but I did do time. They let me out early because I wouldn't stop complaining to the Mattress Police that there were no tags on the mattresses.

Fortunately the Constitution gives us the rights to life, liberty, browns, greens and the pursuit of humus. :P
