What's the Scoop on Poop

So, in the spirit of finding use for everything, can anyone tell me if my cat and dog poop will work as effective compost material? My wife seems to think that it will ruin it. And while I'm thinking she's probably right, I figure I may as well ask before writing of a potentially valuable resource.

No, cat and dog feces are NOT recommended for inclusion in the compost pile. Those materials can contain pathogens that are harmful to humans.

Essentially, you want to avoid the waste of any animal that is a meat eater.

In the most general of terms, omnivore manure can be hot composted. Carnivore (and humanure) should be separately composted and not used directly on food crops. The persistance of undesirable parasite eggs (and toxoplasmosis sp? in cats) makes them not suitable for human consumption directly. For more than you ever wanted to know about humanure: https://weblife.org/humanure/

FWIW they do make a separate inground doogy-do composter, if gadgets help you compost. Use its product on flower or non-food garden beds.

Thanks for clarifying.
