Melon Rinds?

Any thoughts or comments regarding melon rinds added to compost? Fruit fly magnet ? Mold collector? Nitrogen or carbon? Watermelon, honeydew or cantilope- any one better than the other? Any info would be great.
Thanks.
(sorry if this has been covered before)

Great thing to add imo. I put the rind of two cantaloupes in my bin about a month ago and covered them.. I turned the pile last week and there weren't any rinds to be found!

If you bury them in the pile, they won't attract fruit flies. Agree good thing for the pile, break down quickly, add moisture and some fruit sugars to feed the bacteria. Kitchen scraps are generally a "green," more toward the nitrogen side than carbon side.

Yes, I add any type of melon rinds that we have. I like to slice them into thin pieces before adding to the compost pile or bin; they disappear (decompose) fast!

If your pile is already pretty wet, the rinds can be a problem. It's nice to have some "dry browns" handy if you're adding a lot of "green" vegetable scraps to the compost.

I've been resisting for a couple of days, but...

A Rind Is a Terrible Thing to Waste.

Throw it into the compost bin instead. :D
