Ashes in compost?

I just got a compost bin and started, I heat with wood and have 2 stoves so I get a bit of ash, would adding this to the compost help it?

Here's a 4 page discussion we had in the winter about wood ash in compost:

It has a link in it to an earlier discussion.

the general upshot being, put a little in if you want, but keep it minimal, and mix it around well, because it tends to cake.

I've seen it recommended to fertilize gooseberries with a bit of wood ash every year - gives a shot of extra K, and (if you burn hardwoods) calcium, without a big N input, since they don't do well with that...do you grow those? perhaps there's something else with similar requirements that you grow...

I put wood ash from my wood stove in my compost but I don't put in very much. I mix a 5 gallon bucket of organic material with a couple hands full of dirt and a couple hands full of ash. Mix well. I pee it in several times every day until it gets a strong ammonia smell.
