My leaf shredding rig

Here's an easy and fast way to shred leaves:

Rake em up and fill a plastic trash can full, lightly compacted.
Start your weed whacker and at low speed, lower on and then into the can.
Once you're safely into the can you can go to high speed. (Be sure to wear eye protection and a dust mask)
Works like a blender - shreds down to inches of the bottom of the trash can.
Dump into your compost bin.

I reduced a yard full of leaves into about two cans of shredded leaves.

Good yet dangerous idea. :P :D

I've been wanting something to shred all the goodies that go into my compost but I can't seem to justify buying something like a shredder\chipper for my garden. Not that I could afford one anyways.

Another member suggested this in June. I was specific about the dangers this procedure posed:

Please reconsider.

Sorry cynthia I shouldn't have replied with "Good" anything to the post. It would be quite dangerous for the normal person. But I live on the edge and know the possible outcome of the actions I partake in. Others might not, so it is probably not "GOOD" idea for those not willing to loose an eye or something.

I don't want someone to get hurt.

Besides being dangerous, leaves are a treasure not to be lightly wasted. Since I don't have a lot of weeds in my yard (except in my woodland hillside and those stay where they are, to build the soil there), I go roam the neighborhoods and collect other people's.

I keep bags of them handy to add to my compost pile all through the year to have "browns" to balance out all the "green" I always have.

I mulch all the flower & veggie beds with them.

If I had any extra, which I usually don't, I would spread them on the lawn and run the lawn mower over them, to add to the soil there.

I saw Paul James do that trick of yours on Gardening my the yard years ago though. Pretty cool!
