Compost Mix

Can shredded pine cones, pine needles and wood chips be used in making compost?

Pine needles are chuck full of pitch which will not break down well in a garden. The cones if dry and brown and chipped, will help some because of way less pitch in them, but they do have some. The pine turpintine is a garden no no. Wood chips not of pine should be fine, at least it works for me/

Pine needles will breakdown faster if you break them somehow. Maybe cycle them through a mower.

Pine cones will be slow to break down. Real slow I expect.

I think if you follow the 10 percent rule, you should have no problem with pine needles and pine cones (chipped).

Don't know jack about pine turpentine.

two cents
