When we first came to B.C. I think there were only 2 routes to the other side of the Rockies: A 300 km rugged detour to the north round the 'Big Bend' of the Columbia river, or by a shorter but maybe even more rugged way, south into the U.S. then east through/over the Cascades. We never braved either one; the Rogers Pass highway was opened shortly after we got here.

The story I've read about Rogers' discovery of the pass is one I like: He had tried for a few years to find a way through the Rockies from the east, but always had to turn back when winter set in or supplies were running low. Eventually he decided to try from the western side of the mountains; but again was being forced into turning back when the feeling came on him that he was in a place he'd been before. So he took a chance, pushed on and sure enough found himself on a route he'd already reconnoitered from the east. And now we can all drive it at 100 kph!
