Auto cruise control question

Recently my cruise cable wore thru and broke at the throttle. New cable section was added on and it works well; maintains a steady speed. Except...now on hills the control shuts off. Now, I don't mean steep major hills but only slight hills that don't require lots of extra engine power.

It never did this before. So, my question is, does too much cable play, or not enough cause it to shut off with that little popping noise? I could shorten or lengthen it if I knew which to do.

I realize that some cruises are meant to shut off when the speed uphill drops dramatically, but these are slight grades that don't cause a lot of slowdown, not even 5 mph. Was hoping some knowledgeable auto buffs might know!

thx!
