Colonoscopy #2

If I had known prep was going to be several times easier than the one I did 6 years ago I would not have put it off so long. This is totally different than before. I even got to eat a good breakfast and good lunch this time. I had a chicken sandwich, fried potatoes, coke on ice for lunch. 12 noon I had to take 4 mild laxative. 4 pm I had to drink 2 quarts of Gatorade flavor of my choice as long as it is not, Red, Orange or Purple, drink an 8 oz. glass every 15 minutes. So I picked Green. 2 hours later when that chicken sandwich got out of the way the dam broke and the Gatorade came out like a fire hose. I drank 1 more quart of Gatorade it went right through and came out like a fire hose too. I drank the last quart of Gatorade and it came right out a few minutes later. Wow, all done. It does not get any easier than this. I am not even hungry. I am NOT allowed to drink RED color Wine before bed so I will have a glass of White Wine. LOL. Tomorrow is the easy part, put me asleep for 30 minutes, recovery 30 minutes, Waffle House for Breakfast. LOL. :)

Doctor told me to eat light today, I can eat anything I want tomorrow. No Waffle house for breakfast today. We ate lunch at home. I inspected the garden, I planted a few seeds yesterday in preparation for today's rain.

As weird as it is, I'm glad to hear that everything came out all right. Actually been putting this off for a good while mostly because I dislike the old prep for it. Not that anyone actually liked it. This way sounds much more appealing although I dislike sport beverages.

YES everything came out ok. LOL :) . I don't like Gatorade very much either it seemed like the best choice for me, I did not want to over dose on sugar and Gatorade has lots of minerals, salt and other things that kept me from being hungry. There is a very large lists of suggested things to mix the prep with, white grape juice, apple cider, coke, 7 up, tea, coffee, chicken broth, beef broth, ginger ale, vegetable broth, sprite, no pulp grapefruit juice, water. Doctor said I can mix the prep with any liquid I want as long as the color is not, red, orange, purple, no milk products of any kind and no alcohol. You can mix 1/4 prep with coffee, 1/4 with tea, 1/4 with coke, 1/4 with chicken broth. You can mix prep with any combination of liquids you want as long as you drink 8 pints of liquid mixed with prep. If you mix prep with something that does not taste good throw it down the kitchen sink drain there is enough extra prep in the bottle to make another 2 pints of prep with different liquids.

Bottle of prep powder comes with a small measuring spoon that is about = 2 tablespoons per spoon. You only need to use 15 scoops of prep that is about 2 scoops per pint of liquid. I had 1/3 bottle of prep powder that was not used.

6 years ago when I did this it was miserableness and I was hungry all day. This time being able to eat breakfast, eat lunch and not start drinking the liquid until 4 pm it was 50 times easier than before. I will not mind to do this again in 5 years if I can do it like this again.

I had a different doctor this time, a younger doctor. Dr Bendover. LOL. Maybe each doctor has their own way of doing the prep. If the doctor tells you to do it the old way you can do it the new way he will never know the difference. LOL.

Gary -

Did I miss something? What were your results? Polyps? Lesions? Any problems or was everything good?

I have been putting off a colonoscopy for several years. Shame on me. I have to talk to my Dr. about this less arduous pre op preparation.

Good luck to you. Hope all is well.

I think that's true! When I had my one (and only!) done, the doc told me to try to eat only WHITE foods for a week before the prep routine. Good thing I like potatoes & cauliflower! When it was all done he said it sure went fast & easy for him because I cleaned out really good. I guess that was a compliment in a wierd way!

Had my second and last one a couple of months ago. The first prep was a struggle to drink all that vile tasting cleanser. The second prep seven years later was like drinking Kool-Ade. Worst part for me was the anesthesia needles getting poked into the back of my hand. I have a tendency to pass out before I pass out for real. Needles in the arm don't phase me a bit...just something about the back of the hand. After this one I will be too old to worry about another. Seventy is the limit, I guess.

Glad to hear the prep work is not as bad as it was in the past. I've only had one procedure and even though I did manage to down all that foul liquid Roto-Rooter of the digestive tract, the actual procedure was a piece of cake. My first colonoscopy was over 8 years ago and the wife has been nudging me to get another one since I'm getting ready to turn 65 in another 6 weeks or so.

Guess I just may have to schedule that and get it out of the way.

Gary 350, what is the name of the kindlier prep medication you're talking about? I suggested last time, to my specialist, that I'd rather fast for 3 days or even longer, with a gentle laxative, than endure the horrible stuff she prescribes. A previous doctor had gone along with that but this one wouldn't. I believe all doctors who prescribe this stuff (can't remember its name but it causes agonising, severe cramps) should be obliged to use it themselves at least twice a month so they really "get the picture." And I suspect if you already have gut conditions like diverticulosis this doesn't do them any good at all.

My brother, now in his seventies, is a successful survivor of intestinal cancer in his fifties :D .

Boy! Once my doctor learned that Bro had cancer ... I was cooked  ! ... or, something. I've finally escaped to the 5-year plan! "Graduated" might be the better word. The actual procedure under anesthesia is a breeze compared to the prep.

A better way?? I think I have about 3 1/2 years for them to put it in practice before I have to drag myself in for another go-around.
