Spooky! Coming at You ...

It's always best to be prepared!

Spooky, Asteroid Coming on Halloween!

Now, if you really want to be prepared for the next one - which just might be closer than 1.3 lunar distance - prepare to board your spacecraft!

We now know that there are Earth-like planets yet to form in the galaxy! (LINK) . Shoot off in most any direction ... as long as it's not out of the galaxy ... and you can be assured of passing many, many planetary properties suitable for habitation. Some are out there for settlement and many more are likely before you have gone over 50,000 light years.

Reassuring, ain't it? :) Don't be spooked by Spooky. Be Prepared.

If you travel for thousands of years you many even be able to get to some of the Earth-like planets.

Well Tom,

there are some planets which are really close at hand!

I'm sure these delivery drones they're coming out with could get us there. Probably need two for me and my luggage ...

Or a big slingshot would work.

Oh hey!

Spooky is a dead comet! The scientists figured that out yesterday (link).

It shot past about 2 hours ago and we know fer shur now that it's dead and has no appetite for candy. ... or, Earthlings.

Astronomy is so fascinating with the capabilities that we have these days. To think that we once thought that there were only a small number of planets and that Pluto was the last planet, on the very edge of the finite ring of planets spinning around the Sun. And to think that we once thought that the earth was flat. I guess there are some people who believe that the earth is hollow and that there is a sun inside the earth.

I like that word, quotidian. A new word for me. I think I will start using that word once in a while.

Thanks Steve. That sure is a fantastic picture of Jupiter and Venus from Earth, with the perfect silouette pose.

DD came by to take on the task of creating the monster!

Now, I'm left with a small bowl of candy and extra pumpkin. The Jack o'lanterns are compostable. What to do with the uncarved?

If you want a good pumpkin bread recipe, google Half Moon Bay pumpkin bread! It's right up my alley ... actually HMB is only a few miles from where I was born ;). But, I'm trying to keep the weight off ...

I won't be using it for pumpkin pie as winter squash is much better for that purpose. I have made good pumpkin soups, including following a recipe for zucchini soup, substituting pumpkin (best choice). DW claims, she doesn't really like pumpkin as a soup. I know she would go for pumpkin fries but she should be trying to keep the weight off, too! We may comprise with fried patties: 1 beaten egg to each cup of shredded pumpkin and half cup cheese. Onions can be added for extra flavor :).

When I read your post that Spooky passed by "2 hours ago" I was thinking -- so I was out in the garden picking raspberries when that happened, COMPLETELY oblivious....

As for pumpkins, have you tried them cubed in curry dishes and miso stews? Sliced thin like lasagna or wide noodles alone or and with pasta with tomato-based sauce?

Kakai squash which is grown for the hulless seeds have notoriously bland flesh and I initially just put them in the compost, but last year, I tried cooking them in recipes like these, and liked it.

This year, I tried them peeled and sliced and dehydrated with the seeds intact, and those chips are being gobbled up by family, mostly DH. But they have to be dehydrated to crispness. Ones with seeds are better but no seed ones get eaten, too.

I tried marinating or brushing them with "dressing" sprinkling spices, etc. and I like those, too, but plain sea salt has been declared the best.

If you are the type that eat toasted pumpkinseeds whole, hull and all, then you might like them this way as well.

Wow! AppleStar!

Those hullless seed pumpkins are a new idea for me. So are the pumpkin chips! Years ago, I tried a "hullless" squash and wasn't happy with the seeds. I do like shelled seeds, tho.

No, I don't think I could get the pumpkins in any soup into DW. She gets ideas and is stubborn. Maaaybe a curry ... could claim that they are golden potatoes ;).

The noodles are something else I never thought of. I've heard of using zucchini that way ... & of course, there is spaghetti squash ...
