Or, not.
I have stayed out of about 2/3rds of the subforums. For one thing, at first, it was difficult and time consuming to get around to them.
A few years ago, someone asked a question on the Vegetable forum about what she should have on her pesticide shelf so that she would not have to do a lot of research and run to the garden center after pests showed during the growing season. I listed the organic pesticides on my shelf and what I used them for.
She didn't ask the question on the Organic subforum. I felt kind of good directing her towards something other than the synthetics, although I don't remember saying anything about that.
I realize that some folks are absolutely committed to no "-cides," whatsoever. Okay, but she obviously wasn't one of them. Anyway ... I was just lambasted for suggesting a pesticide prior to the identification of the pest!! And yet, this was exactly what she was asking for ... The person doing the lambasting was a HG moderator ... My response was that she was going "beyond organic" and, I decided I'd better stay out of that subforum so as to avoid a confrontation there. (I haven't seen this moderator posting on HG for many months.)
I grew up on a small farm. As a young adult, I had my own small farm and worked on the large, neighboring farms. Then, I worked for a number of years in a commercial rose greenhouse. All this time, I had vegetable gardens. I'm in a location where it is very difficult to grow roses well outdoors (I continue to reassure myself, facing my failures that way ). I do, however, grow lots of annual flowers every year and have quite a few perennials. On HG, I have stayed out of the homestead and flower forums.
A funny little story .. .. When I was young and just starting off on my own as a gardener, I wanted to grow bonsai. I was moving from Oregon to California and took my trees with me ... some folks might already recognize my problem ... Yeah, the CA ag people took my trees away from me at the "bug station" crossing the border. Yep. My bonsai was deemed dangerous and I had a choice of continuing with my move or staying with the plants ...

when I come to THG, I just click on View New Posts... it brings up the new stuff independent of sub-forums and only in chrono order, so I don't even pay attention to what sub-forum it is in. It has occasionally led me to make mistakes, e.g. responding to a post in Bonsai forum as if it were about a full-sized tree, because I failed to notice that it was under Bonsai. But it makes sure I look at a variety of posts.
I would hope people are free to give their opinions/ practices in any Forum without being "lambasted." I know that I am one with passionate convictions and perhaps am guilty of being a little too controversial. But I never mean to put anyone down or hurt anyone's feelings. If I do, I hope I will be called on that. If you read the "Comments" section under almost any on-line news item, they tend to quickly degenerate in to name calling. I really appreciate that we have a place here where we can have real discussion/ dialog/ maybe even debate, without getting mean or hostile.

Thank you, RainbowGardener.
It seemed rather odd that I've been around a long while and have stayed out of so many parts of the forum.
"View New Posts." Maybe it is because I'm using a mobile device but I don't see it ... I've got View Unread and View Unanswered and View Your ... I can say that it was a big help when I discovered View Your. I think it came with a forum upgrade about a year ago but I could have been missing it all this time.

hmmm... I don't know what it looks like on a mobile, but for me, under the Helpful Gardener logo is a horizontal menu that has: View unanswered posts View unread posts View new posts View active topics
I mostly use View new posts, but every few days I check View unanswered posts to be sure there's nothing languishing around that never got a response. As much as possible, I think everyone that posts here deserves to get some kind of response even if it's "I don't know, I'm really sorry we couldn't help you." At least then they know someone read it, it didn't just disappear in to cyberspace.

For what it's worth, I have an iPhone 4 and use google chrome as my browser. On HG's home page, I have 'view new post' listed as an option.
Not all browsers work for all sites on all phones. You may want to visit the app store and try installing a second browser in an effort to get better service. Before retiring, I needed 3 browsers for work related sites. Opera, Chrome and Safari.
Good luck.

Thanks Apple. Also the dark gray box with the three white lines in it is the drop down with all the navigation written in text. The navigation is displayed in two ways, as icons in brown and as text in the dark gray dropdown. I intended to "fix" the position of that drop down a little more to the right so it didn't cover up the word "forum" but decided to leave it there because I happen to like so-called imperfections.
Well,
this is a little frustrating.
I don't have the speech bubble or the 3 white lines. Howsomeever, I'll be able to check things on the pc this evening and imagine that the links will show up on either Firefox or Chrome. Yes, maybe one of those should be my next download ... instead of that cursive writing app .

I've saved drafts several times now. It helps a lot!
One of those self-help slogans: "Your life is your story, edit often." I need to edit the edits ! There may be a few ways to get something right but I can find a thousand ways to get it wrong.
For those who haven't used it: It is there under the Full Editor. Saving saves only the subject and text ... I wasn't sure if that meant links and photos are lost. Turns out that of those two, photos are lost. Links may be more time consuming and it's easy to forget their location. It's good not to see them disappeared.

I want to bug the webmaster for the thumbs up feature....
I agree completely digitS -- I tend start off writing a few comments which turns into a mini-novel, then get interrupted before I can edit and submit. My finger hovers over the submit but I know in my heart that I really should read it over... Besides, I might remember MORE things to add.... Saving draft is the way to go.
I also like doing that if I suddenly have doubts or draw a mental blank about some detail I'm describing -- best to save the draft and go check and incidentally fetch a ref link or two....

Yeah that save draft feature really is good. Especially since some of the members on this forum can post some serious answers that are like small books, so being able to go back through it and proof read would be highly beneficial. I am happy that I landed on this gardening forum, because I really have learned a lot here. I try to help with citrus, because the more I learn about gardening here, with vegetables and things like that, I realize that I don't really have nearly as much knowledge as I thought I did. I know so much more now because of interacting with the active members on this forum. It's helpful and I hope that this season I will be able to keep my tomato plants through the whole season! "THUMBS UP!"
We need an "Automatic Paragraphing" feature , and "Sporadic Punctuation" . I really enjoy reading forum responses but when I see a screen full with no paragraph separation, I either don't read it or just skim.Voices30 wrote:Yeah that save draft feature really is good. And, we need Roger to do something about those days-to-maturity ratings on seed packets and catalog pages!
Some of my most frustrating moments as a gardener ..
On another front, I'm finding that if my new stylus never gets further than 6" from the touch screen, life is better. Now, I just need to make sure it's well attached to the case when I toss the device on the pickup seat or cram it in a pocket.

yeah, I have discovered that I really do prefer using my tablet with a stylus (even though it didn't come with one). It feels better and the screen doesn't get so many finger print oils on it. Only trouble is, since it didn't come with one, it also didn't come with any method of attaching one. So now I have to keep track of the tablet and keeping it charged AND keep track of the stylus. Very challenging!

If you are in or go to the same thread and hit (post reply) you will see an additional button next to (save draft), called (load draft) -- that's one way.
Another way is to go to your profile from one of the links at the top of the page, then you will see (manage drafts) in the menu sidebar on the left. All your drafts will be listed there and can be loaded to finish and submit to the appropriate thread.

It's taken me 4 years to realize that the "unread" part has to do only with the original post! Replies that I haven't read won't show up unless I haven't been on that thread until they have been made by others. A response that has an additional question will be missed by me ... maybe that is just as well for the OP because those late questions may "hijack" the thread.
Discovery continues ... ...

I am learning a lot about how to use the phone apps. I don't use many functions on my phone and I usually only visit the forum on my computer.
I don't see a lot of difference between active posts and new posts, so I usually only use the active posts.
The hardest thing for me to track down are old posts by subject.
I admit that sometimes I don't look at the header when people ask questions, so I don't really know what forum I am in. Sometimes, I catch it by the types of questions people ask, but not always. Even though there are a lot of sub forums to post in, there are some questions that could fit in one or more sub forums.

None of the following is intended as personal criticism - rather as good-natured, somewhat tongue-in-cheek commentary about language; its use and the way it changes; but it could be annoying to anyone who doesn't like playing with words.
BUT yes, in an earlier post I'd say you were guilty of some paragraph run-on. Also of separating sentences with commas instead of full stops; something that I dislike but that has become the norm. (By the way, I think there are numbers by which posts can be referenced, but where are they listed?)
AND I know I shouldn't begin a sentence with a preposition but it's common and feels 'OK' so I've happily done it twice.
Anyway, since the subject interests me I'll put a few questions & comments up for discussion by whoever else finds them interesting:
Is spelling important? Does punctuation matter? And what about grammar! If they're only important sometimes, what are those times? Are some types of language change to be welcomed and others resisted, or maybe just suffered? Is there a valid relationship between 'proper' language and social/economic status? If so, how can one bridge any gap that language creates?
Is there a need for an officially 'correct' version of English and how could (should) folks of all backgrounds be persuaded to value it?
... Well, not guilty in this case: Two short complete sentences starting with (doubly correct) capitals, ending with appropriate punctuations and containing no redundancies. Go to the head of the class.Voices30 wrote:I confess. I am guilty as charged! We need an "Automatic Paragraphing" feature , and "Sporadic Punctuation" . An essay assignment? I'm not up to that on a New Year's Day!
Rigid, petrified -- I trust that the generations of humanity will not tolerate that with their languages. At the same time, I can rejoice in an ability to read what Thomas Jefferson wrote in cursive, with his own hand (& quill). It's unfortunate that I stumble thru Chaucer's English in Canterbury Tales but, I hope that we continue to have specialists who can provide everyone with assistance.
Does it trouble, should it trouble, anyone if I spell "through" as "thru?" What about the placement of that question mark, before or after the quotation mark?? It tickled me recently to read a British scholar traveling between Australia and New Zealand and having trouble with accents and the choice of words . Probably most of the people of the English-speaking world imagine that they are the same.
I have some trouble with language because I'm hard of hearing. Both interacting with others and learning new words has been a little difficult. And, this isn't new! At 15, I had a hearing test and was told that I had a 30 decibel loss. Wearing hearing aids by 33, hearing loss rated a "severe" by my early 40's: I realized after another 20 years that both speaking and writing were impacted because hearing words and sentences reinforces both forms of language use. I was not getting that reinforcement for "proper" English use and hadn't for a long, long time.
Funny thing ... the first standardized test that I was aware of was in the 8th grade. I didn't rate very well in vocabulary and math. It bothered me that my knowledge and use of words wasn't thought to amount to much. Mediocre math skills, I shrugged off. Ha ha!
I began reading the dictionary. My parents bought a set of encyclopedias about that time. Must have been trying to memorize those books, I spent so much time reading them!

Mobile Devices and Content
The migration to mobile devices has changed how paragraphs are structured. Two sentences in a paragraph are sufficient.
Short Paragraphs
Style guides recommended four to five sentences in a paragraph. But that was for a world before mobile devices.
Short Sentences
In addition to short paragraphs, short sentences are recommended. Easier to read on mobile devices.
Reading on mobile devices works best with short sentences.
Headings Improves Reading on Mobile Devices
Use Headings to clearly delineate different sub-topics within your post.
People reading on mobile like to skim. It helps them quickly understand what the content is about.

Wow, that adds a whole new dimension to my musings about adopting/resisting language changes. Is Admin promoting these as guidelines for acceptable posting here? I hope not. I'm heartened by the wink at the end of the item (nudge, nudge?) and the needless repetition seems to give the game awaywebmaster wrote:Mobile Devices and Content

Nah, I would never require such a thing. I'm easy going and happy if people are nice to each other. That's really my biggest concern.
But that doesn't mean I don't dream of a world with sensible paragraph breaks.
When I see posts that are a single paragraph that's 800 words long, I may edit them myself to break them up into coherent chunks.
It's better for everyone that way. The OP has a higher chance of getting their question answered.
Long posts may discourage people from reading them. So I do the editing for them and don't bother sending a PM as I don't want the person to think they did anything wrong.

Hah, but you wrote one anyway!digitS' wrote:An essay assignment? I'm not up to that on a New Year's Day!
Steve, thanks for pointing out something I have never considered: the fact that a hearing deficit can affect not only auditory perception and speech patterns, but also writing skills. Obviously you have overcome any such effects. Congratulations; reading dictionaries - ouch!
Here's an odd thing I notice, as a definite 'oldster': Although my hearing becomes less acute, I am also less able to tolerate noisy situations; loud cross-conversations, squealy kids and - especially - loud concerts & movies (although I believe they are now played at much higher volume than in the past; probably because digital technology allows over-amplification with less distortion.)
Although old, I hope and claim I'm not 'Rigid, petrified,' but there can be a distinction between general respect for young folks and approval of all of their habits or every change they promote.
It doesn't bother me that you abbreviate 'through' - but come on, (haha) it ought to be "thro'." (I grew up in Britain; don't mind your 'thru' but can't bring myself to use it. ). And look at me struggle, deciding whether punctuation should be inside or outside brackets & quotation marks. (I was taught inside.).
And I do struggle with deciding when/whether 'correct' spelling & grammar really matter; particularly as I was 'good at them' in school, and have derived pleasure from relative familiarity with them. It does seem obvious that grammar especially can be important in avoiding ambiguity. Remember the 'Chair for sale by lady with claw feet."
I'm rambling, which is my habit. But it's more fun in face-to-face discussion than in front of this little screen, so I'll shut up.

I picked up a 2018 book at the library and read quite a bit of it. The prodigal tongue : the love-hate relationship between American and British English by Lynne Murphy. She has a web blog that I visit now and then. Fun! Dr Murphy is an American teaching linguistics at a British university. The differences and learning of them is fun but enlightenment comes from being a little exposed to our own choices. Wow. How did these things happen?
Years ago, I was reading about Hildegard of Bingen and thinking about her "O Viriditas Digiti Dei." It kind of appealed to me that I could try to be a part of making this a greener world. And, I can still be Steve:

VanIsle_BC,
You may be looking for that in the "Quick Reply."
Click "Post Reply" so that you have that text block to type in. Then, look below the box. You will see "Save draft" and then it will question your intent since links and pictures won't be saved (I guess).
Your drafts can be found on the left-hand side bar after you click "profile" up there on every forum page. Then, I clicked to "load draft" ... Anyway, those are the steps I used to post ... this.

Thanks 'Steve;
I or my computer must have screwed up. The draft has not been saved although there is one there from last year. Oh well it was getting too long-winded anyway.
My early high school Latin has been rusting unused for 65 years; virtually gone. I'll take a guess at The 'green-ness' of God's finger(s?) I.e. The green hand of God - ?

That's about the correct translation. High School Latin ?
I was thinking of mentioning to you that I had a Canadian grandfather. His father was born in East Knoyle in the south of England.
It probably doesn't surprise too many people that I had a Canadian family since I am so close to the 49th parallel but I grew up nearly 1,000 miles south of the border. Grandfather liked sunshine! The BC coast must not have been too comfortable to him after he joined his brother there around 1900. He was born in Quebec. Grandfather did, however, return in his old age and lived for several years on the Fraser River near Hope.
I now live in what was my grandmother's old stomping grounds. She was from Missouri and her grandfather had a homestead not all that far from here.

It's not too comfortable here right now; interminably raining cats, dogs, cows & horses - and damn cold with it.digitS' wrote:The BC coast must not have been too comfortable to him
Steve, I'm enjoying this but maybe we're taking up too much forum space with personal chit-chat? I'll stop and send you a PM in due course. Anyone who mourns the loss of our fascinating public banter can complain .

Hmmm... I sent a PM and it now sits in my Private Message Outbox with a notation saying 'Sent: Thu Jan 03, 2019 5:21 pm.' Which is odd because it does NOT appear in the 'sent' box. Steve, did you get it? Anyone explain to me how this part of the forum works? Is there something in my system not playing nice?

Your message stays in outbox until it’s read by the recipient, then it’s placed in the sent box.
I might complain. I’ve been enjoying eavesdropping on your exchange. I just haven’t pitched in because I couldn’t think of anything clever enough to say.
But I can and do add my thumbs up to the digitS’s posted photos — very funny and immediately understandable comparison
