Farm to table dining in NOLA

A quick trip to NOLA. Dinner Sunday was at John Besh's Steakhouse located in Harrah's. Superb! John Besh is huge on farm to table and ranch to table dining. I have also dined at his restaurant Luke and La Provence. All are 5 star.

The surprise of the trip was dinner at The Woodland Plantation, 45 minutes south of NOLA and WELL worth the trip. The plantation house is on the Jack Daniels label. The grounds are beautiful. Instead of rooms there are cabins with 3 to 5 bedrooms, each bedroom has a private bath and a common living space and kitchen. Breakfast and dinner are served in the dining hall which is an old church. We went for dinner. There is no menu. Dinner is whatever they have fresh. A 5 course meal. We had fried eggplant topped with crawfish in a cream sauce for an appetizer. The next course was a cup of shrimp stew followed by a salad. The salad was mixed greens with grapes, almond slivers and shaved parmesan. There were 4 choices for the main course. I had red snapper topped with lump crab meat in a lemon butter sauce and fried crab claws. G Had duck breast cooked to perfection. Our sides were bow tie pasta mac and cheese and the freshest, brightest green beans cooked with bacon. They still had a snap. Then came desert. Choice of pecan pie, carrot cake, coconut cream pie or bread pudding all served with a scoop of Blue Bell vanilla ice cream and all baked fresh that morning. All of the seafood slept in the Gulf the night before.

The Woodland Plantation caters to charter fishing trips in both coastal waters and off shore. They have Charter Captains available to hire. It is an amazing place for weddings, reunions, family gatherings, honeymoons and a lovely place for a get away.

We WILL visit The Woodland Plantation again - sooner rather than later.

If any of you ever visit NOLA leave time for dinner at The Woodland Plantation. You may want to spend a night there.

If you ever visit NOLA PM me. I lived there for 4 years in the 80's and visit occasionally. I would LOVE to give tips on what to see and do.

I know people love crawfish, but I can not get myself to eat them; I used them as bait and that is what I see them as.

Redneck 7 course meal; six pack and a bag of chips.

Most of that meal sounds good, I had the best shrimp dinner in Florida once, shrimp made all kinds of different ways, yum.

Catgrass - If you have not tried John Besh's restaurants do so. There are others in addition to the three I mentioned. NOLA - an Emeril restaurant is also to die for.

I usually avoid NOLA this time of year but we lucked out. There was a "cold front" and the temperatures were only in the mid 80's with only 65%-70% humidity. My friend had not been to NOLA in 50 years. She was "young and dumb" (her words) and did not see much other than Bourbon Street. I enjoyed walking with her through the French quarter, pointing out the architecture, going in and out of antique shops on Royal, talking to people on the street. I took her to Café Du Monde. She had never had beignets and café au lait. We rode a street car, and walked along Moon Walk. She was shocked to see that the level of the river compared to the French Quarter. Of course we stopped at Pat O'Brian's. My friend had to have a hurricane.

Tom - you are missing out on one of natures treasures. Bet you have never eaten raw oysters. Applestar if you ever do visit NOLA let me know. Lots of places to see and things to do that are off the beaten path. Some of the finest restaurants in the world. When we travel my job is to select restaurants.

BTW - I miss spoke. The Woodland Plantation is on the southern Comfort label.

elizabeth-I have heard of John Besh's restaurant, but was not aware that it was in Harrahs! I love all those places you mention, and I just love the Quarter! Probably the best daquiri I've ever had was from a street vendor in New Olreans. Just love that place!

Catgrass- this is a list of Besh restaurants.

https://beshrestaurantgroup.com/

The individual restaurant links did not work for me. If you can not link from this site you can look them up individually and view an on line menu. Do make reservations. Some are booked several days in advance, especially on the weekend.

John Besh is the darlin Chef in NOLA. He has given Emeril a run for his money. He is charming, charismatic and surprisingly humble. He is also cute.

Enjoy
