You do not need people like him around; he will only bring you down. Move out and be more selective of your next room mate.

Move when you can. He sounds like he will never get it. Find a way and get out.

Have a little "chat" with the guy regarding him being a person nobody likes.

Or,

Move out when you can asap. You (and your family/cats) don't need that.

Start buttering the floor. Fight fire with fire. >:)

On a more realistic note, just leave when you can. You might want to consider buying a condo with 2 bedrooms. You'd be surprised at how cheap they are now (depending on where you live, and how low the mortgage rates are. A great way to get a jump on this depressed market. Then you can pick any roomate you want who will subsequently help you cover your mortgage. And if you are a first time buyer, you can get in with only 5% down.

I did this about 6 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did. I would have paid 1800 to rent a 2 br in my area and my mortgage was around 1950 because I bought at the peak of the market. But I had roommates, several over those 6 years and never had any issues making my payments as I charged 900-1000 in rent.

Perhaps you should put a deadbolt lock on your bedroom door. It isn't all that hard to install one. Keep your stuff in your room and lock the door whenever you leave your room. It sounds like a pain in the neck, but it will quickly become a habit for you, and you won't even notice locking and unlocking the door as you come and go. I had to do this the last time I shared a place with a roommate. (It's also why I've never had another roommate! :> )

Don't bother with a standard keyed lock. Get a deadbolt. Regular keyed locks are a snap to get through.

I used to be a live-in caregiver. I installed a deadbolt, and never left the house before locking my cat in my bedroom. I even had a wooden rod in the windowsill.
I trust no one with my fur children.

Do you watch `The Big Bang Theory` You need a roommate agreement

I would put labels on my stuff with your name on it and say Please do not use, only for ..... use.

Have you talked to him about the things that bother you, this is something I did when my kids were teenagers A benhavior contract

You get to say what you want on it, he gets to say what he wants on it

You put things like...you are not allowed to barge into my bedroom (he must learn some impulse control)
Mark your stuff and if it is something that is easy and use scotch tape if possible to keep the top on like a seal

So you do a behavioural contract you list everything that are non negotiable with you and there has to be some sort of penalty for breaking the contract, this is also a method for him to change his behaviour and be very aware of what he is doing

And look for another apartment maybe the condition on the contract could be that he pays your share of the deposit to you, if you choose to move because his behaviour has not changed Good Luck
