Remember Dan Quayle's famous spelling lesson?

When he corrected an elementary student's spelling of potato, which the student already had correct. Vice President Quayle spelled it p o t a t o e. The media had a great time over that blunder.

So here were go with our lesson for today:

potato - p o t a t o

tomato - t o m a t o

By the way, my parents were from N.C. Until early adulthood I pronounced those words just like my mother in her N.C. southern drawl, "potater" and "tomater". My drawl is as bad as ever, but did, with lots of effort, manage to clean up those two pronunciations.

little Jimmie Dickens of Grand Ole Opery fame had a song with the lyrics "take an old cold tater and wait" Bet he spelled as well as VP Quayle.

No one has ever gone wrong spelling "potato" this way: s-p-u-d. :)
