Hmmm ... I wasn't aware that Hood had active fumeroles. That's interesting! Are there just a few random holes that vent, or is it a fume vent field? Are they venting sulfur dioxide? Do they produce enough volume of toxic gases to present a danger to those near the area?
Please be careful skiing around there! I've read of skiers falling into snow-covered vents, dying from the fumes.

I know the secret. I took a shower. Tomorrow we go off the Fruit Loop diet. Cereal and milk have been pretty much it for 3 weeks.
Kisal, It's worth it. Best TV show ending EVER. I would have had to use drugs to watch that show for six years. Every commercial, every show and every season was a cliff hanger. On Netflix, you just move on. I honestly don't know how the show could have been fun for 6 years with commercials but without them, it was great.
I'm completely happy. Now I have to get back to my life.

Kisal there is only one vent I know of, it is above Timber Line to the right.
It is below what is called the Hogs Back. The Hogs back is the most popular way to climb to the top of Mt. Hood. People have fallen in to it before. There have been a number of people die on Hood, we lose some every year I think.

)In all seriousness, a very close friend of mine died on Hood not many years ago. He was climbing with his son, and some rocks broke loose and fell on him (my friend). His son could only watch as his dad fell a thousand or so feet to his death. It was devastating for all of us who knew the guy, but especially traumatic for his son. Hood is well known for being dangerous.

We had a crazy snow storm last night that started out as freezing rain. I DID NOT expect the 12" (appox) snow on the ground this morning -- it's sticking everywhere! DH's office is open 2 hrs late. I guess the schools are closed because I see the neighborhood kids playing.
I usually use the "View Posts Since Last Visit" to read all the posts I haven't read, but at 8AM this morning, nothing was loading/took FOR-EVER to load. I had to give up. EVERYBODY checking on weather closings? Powers and Data lines down? Guess it gave me a break.

Our son is in Oregon for some disc golf tournaments. I guess I should call him and advise him to not play any tournaments on Mt. Hood.
Kisal, I don't think you can smell Sulphur Dioxide. At least I can't. It doesn't seem to be harmful for most folks, but it has always caused me to have asthma attacks so bad my air passages would close down and I had to exit the areas in a hurry. Hydrogen Sulphide is another story. It smells like rotten eggs and it knocks you out pretty quickly. I once had to be evacuated from an area with hydrogen sulfide when I passed out with my oxygen mask on. It doesn't take much when it is leaking around the edges of your mask.
I think volcanic vents emit both. I seem to remember a story about a village in Africa built around a deep lake in the cone of a dormant volcano. Over many years, sulphur dioxide developed in pockets at the bottom of the lake. The pockets developed enough pressure to erupt through the water column above them and envelope the village. Hundreds of people were asphyxiated in their sleep that night.

OOOOOOh, Dexter's another one we watch all at once. Lost has more twists than Dexter if that's possible.
I hate the way most long running shows end like the Sopranos. Lost was planned from the very first episode. I guess they knew it was 6 years and done. Great ending, great plan, no disappointment at all and I don't mind it being over. That's an unusual thing for a long running serial.
Tedin, I've heard that lake story before. It's been a long time since I thought of it, though. I remember it as being carbon dioxide that developed on the bed of the lake and erupted during the night, killing an entire village. I guess it's happened more than once. Makes one wonder about something like that happening at Crater Lake!

Your memory is better than mine. You are right, it was CO2 that vented from the volcano and killed the villagers.
Now I am not sure that it was a vent from the volcano that caused it or if it was gas from organic decomposition at the bottom of the lake. If it was organic decomposition, it should have been hydrogen sulfide like "swamp gas".

Rain slid away yesterday. The wind was whipping so hard we actually radioed for a dock hand to catch a line when we came in. That's a first. Today it's supposed to hit 58, very bright sunshine. We're supposed to hit 67 by Wednesday so we'll spend a few days on the shredder/chipper. Mount Compost is bigger than ever.
We considered either cutting way back or not planting the vegetable garden this year but our memories are like that of squirrels. We've forgotten the near death experiences of last summer's heat already and we're sharpening the tines on the tiller.

I posted this here as Charlie and the other TV buffs have been talking about their favorite shows.
My wife’s 91-year-old dad lives with us and his big entertainment is the television. I had the satellite company hook up his TV in his bedroom but he loves the big screen. I hate to take it away and most of the time he is in the middle of a movie, even if he is sleeping his way through it. So I do not get much TV time. I decided to get a DVR put in my bedroom and went TV shopping with my wife. I was looking at a 32â€

Yep! Snow on the beach, they're sayin'. Supposed to last through Friday. Tom, my 50" plasma is 2 years old . The picture is magnificent.
I think it will be a while before we can justify 3D. Are all shows in 3D or is it just a few?
If not are the regular 1080P 2D pictures any better? We waited for years until the prices fell to buy a big TV. Like you, I learned to take my wife along to shop because she actually picked out a bigger better TV than I would have. We have a 32 on the boat but the room is so small it looks like a theater.

Charlie I am told that the Plamas have goteng better and more efficent as well. I do not know what yours is like but this one has a very good picture about as good as they get. There are not that many 3D movies out yet but we will see more as time goes on.

I guess we aren't gonna get the 4 to 8 inches they've been predicting. Apparently, the system dumped the majority of its moisture on you guys up north.
There was a heavy dusting on the ground when I woke up this morning, and it snowed for about another hour after that. I guess there was an accumulation of an inch or two. Now, it's melting fast. So, even if we get some more snow later today and over night, I doubt we'll see much more than we did this morning ... which suits me just fine.
It's pretty to see it falling and to see everything covered in that pristine white blanket, but if I wanted snow on the ground, I'd just go back to Illinois!

We worked our butts off on the boat today. In preparation for a new HVAC system, we removed 2 32 year old heat exchangers, two compressors and all associated freon, water and electric lines.
It got up to 75 degrees today. It's 71 right now at 7:35PM. We will sit on the moon deck tonight and listen to oldies.
Weather wise, it don't get no better than this.
