Let's talk carpet

I've got a room that's desperately in need of a facelift. After some consideration, I've decided the walls and ceiling are going to be painted as one big mural. It'll be time consuming but not terribly expensive, and I think it'll look great when it's done. The problem is the floor. I'm going to be replacing the carpet in the room, but a solid color or repeating pattern will just break the illusion of being elsewhere. What would be awesome would be to include the floor (it almost has to be carpeted) in the overall design.

Has anyone tried to "paint" a carpet-mural using dyes? Did it work? What kind of dyes would you suggest? How about application methods?

I'm on a fairly tight budget, so this is all going to be DIY stuff.

A strange little corner of life that I run across every now and then...when I'm unable to do much else other than sit at the computer and have my fingers scatter every which way on the keyboard...is a small intersection somewhere between and among Quilting, Weaving, Braided Rugs, and American Colonial traditions.

It has at least two names. (I've just done Internet searches on both, and boy are there lots of places for you to look at!)

I've also seen them referred to as "floor cloths," so hunt something up. They're very much a DIY item--at least, so far they are....

Check out products called "fabric paints". The pigments are extremely finely ground, and cover the surface of the fibers, unlike "regular" paint that can bind the fibers together, making a mess. Deco Art is a good brand.....
