Must I fork the lawn before applying restoration seeds?

Hi!

I just went to B&Q and bought some lawn restoration seeds.
On the back of the packet it says I should makes spiked in the ground with a depth of at least 15cm.

Is this really required for the grass seeds to grow? Just its going to be pretty hard work on an already existing lawn where the soil is quite tough.

Thanks,
Sil.

I have a spike aerator that works well. Could you rent a machine?

Renting an aerator machine will be the best option for you I think, I rented an aerator from Home Depot tool rental a month ago, it had a built-in over-seeder as well. you can try on of those.
