Think concrete slab (for a garage floor or a parking area). The technique used to get the concrete level will work perfectly for your project. Not too costly - mostly a few straight boards and some wooden stakes. If you know someone in the home building business they could probably show you how to set it up. Or you could get a book from the library that will show you how to do it.

The lumber and stakes can be reused for other projects. I'm assuming that you have a good level, if not, you will need to get one. A transit is a really big help if you can borrow one, otherwise you could use a water hose for the long distance leveling or a level with a laser beam.

Sorry about that; I had hoped that my last post would be in time ...

Your pursuit of the perfectly flat lawn has piqued my curiosity. I hope you'll post a few photo's when it greens up. I'd really like to see what it looks like.
