When I bought this property, I later found that the owners where basically only cutting the grass 2-3 times a year. We tried to air the grass by racking it to lift the "hay like" dead grass under the seamingly healthy grass. When it comes to grass and gardening in general, I need to learn a lot. Our city has a ban on perticides, so I'm looking for advide on getting this grass in a healthy state. Weeds are popping every 2-3 feet, I'm assuming from the result of the dead grass.
I'm living in Eastern Canada.

hi there
you can repair the lawn you have by getting rid of the dead grass and over seeding new grass.
I think the first thing you need to do is remove all of the old thatch (dead grass)
Cut your lawn very short about 1 inch high or so.
If you can - rent a power rake they work great or if it is just a small lawn you can rake it your self but you need to use a thatching rake.
dig up your weeds and level out the holes......
Here is a link it is a great site for lawn repair https://www.hometips.com/articles/yardcare/lawn_restoration/lawn_rest1.html
It gives you step by step what to do.
good luck
