Lawn needs life support

I recently purchased a home and the lawn.... um needs some urgent care. There are numerous dead spots with bare dirt areas. The bare dirt is hard and compacted. What can I do to get my lawn off of life support?

It looks like an old lawn and it looks pretty compacted. I think it is time to renovate. If the lawn is pretty far gone it may not be worth saving and you would be better off starting over. But if it still has some life to it then you can try to preserve the existing lawn. If money is a concern, you can do it in stages. If you get a good patch of grass growing, you can use the patch to plug the rest of the areas. If you over seed, then that is another thing. Seeding is not done by locals. We usually put in a lawn by plugs or stolons and not by seed since most warm season grasses will live for many years and the grass that does grow from seed is a menace.
