Patchy backyard

I'm wondering if I could get some advice on repairing the grass in my backyard. The previous homeowner put sod in but there's some sort of problem. I'm thinking it was either the wrong type of grass (the yard is very shady) or it wasn't installed properly. Any tips on fixing this would be appreciated especially on the slopey parts around the patio.

What is the soil underneath the sod like?

Definitely clay. It seems to get good drainage as the yard is on a gentle decline.

One of my neighbors tilled the whole yard, added topsoil, tilled again, then seeded with shady grass that grows well in clay. Looks good still. Not sure what he used but even if I did it might not be the same type of grass that grows well in your area.
