Scalping! How low can I go on that first cut?

Bermudagrass is waking up nicely in Middle Ga but I've got last winter's dead grass hanging out. It's gotta go! I've researched it. Read up on it and I'm ready to do it. Well almost..... So I'm all in for the scalp. I'll do it. Now how low do I drop it on the first cut? I'd like to get down to 1.5 inches. So should I just drop it to the that height in one cut or drop it gradually over several cuts?

How tall is the grass now? It is less stressful on the grass to cut off only 1/3 of the blade at a time. You can cut again after a week and keep cutting every 5-7 days until you get to the height you want it to be. It is also easier on the mower. Mine chokes if I try to cut off grass that has been left too long. Even the weed whacker chokes.
