grass has split ends, anyone know why?

Hello everyone. I spent the majority of the last two days using a thatch rake on my lawn to remove the excessive moss. After doing so, the lawn looks really beat up, but I expected that. However, what I've noticed now, is that there is alot of long shoots of dead grass that is freyed on the end and looks like they have split ends. I assume it will be cut down once I mow again, however not knowing what it is or whats making it happen concerns me. Anyone have any ideas?

the usual suspect is a dull mower blade . . .
