Is it too late to use a lawn roller?
I planted seed yesterday and I was reading a little about starting lawns by seed today and it seems that I forgot a step. I'm not sure how important it is, but I'd at least like to make an attempt to do it right, so I want to rent a roller and roll it if it's not too late.

Thank you both for replying. I changed my mind about rolling it because we have been watering the heck out of it and I'm afraid that my feet will sink in too deep. We are supposed to have a little rain tonight and I got the ok to take tomorrow off so I have a new plan.
I probably could rent one of those aerator, but I turned up the soil pretty deep and it would probably sink at this point.
I dug up the whole area pretty deep to compensate for sprinkler trenches. I didn't want any trenches showing after the grass comes in and I know I will sink down pretty deep right now with just my shoes. So tomorrow I'm planning on using small sheets of plywood to lay down, walk all over it and than move to the next sheet before moving the first sheet. I just keep doing this until I go all the way around the yard compacting it with the plywood.
Originally when I was planning to put in sod, I was going to cut in the sod for stepping stones. I didn't do it with the seed because I would be walking too much on the seed. I'm hoping that the plywood will also help me install the stepping stones. It would make it a lot easier to put the stepping stones in now.

Thanks!Marlingardener wrote:The plywood sounds like a very good idea! When your grass comes up, let it get 4"-5" tall before mowing, and then mow on the highest setting. You can fertilize lightly right after the first mowing with a balanced fertilizer. Don't go for a high nitrogen fertilizer, since that promotes top growth, and your grass is still establishing a good root system.
Your lawn will be a thing of beauty!
