Peat moss to prevent water runoff?

Hi everyone.

Main problem with my lawn is the soil. Home was built in a oak forest with rocks for dirt. I guess they brought in 3 inches of topsoil and then seeded. So I have a few inches of dirt and then rocks and clay soil.

So last spring I put down 2 inches of topsoil and reseeded. But I still have water runnoff down the hills.

Was thinking about adding peat moss. Any thoughts?

P.S. I have my own great compost that I spread on the lawn when it's ready.

Stick with the compost! If the peat moss dries out, it forms a hard impermeable surface, that the water runs off even more and is very difficult to wet again. Once well wetted again, it holds moisture, but you would have to be very sure not to let it dry out ever.

Compost absorbs water and holds moisture and does not dry out like that. Work on making more compost! In the meantime, any mulch like leaves and grass clippings would help also.
