Ugly Lawn

Hello everyone I just bought my first house large size yard but very patchy grass just plain ugly. I can mow it but thats about it, I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to turn this around. I would like to be proud of my lawn but don't know the first thing attached are some pictures I really want to learn

Thanks for helping me out Marlingardener. Can I just grab this soil test kit from my home depot [img]https://i1057.photobucket.com/albums/t396/spennyman1/soil.jpg[/img] will this work. as you can see from picture some spots seem pretty sandy with heavy clay under neath

Did the soil test show you were lacking in any nutrients? Did you ammend the soil from the results of the test?
