Help! is this a lawn fungus or somekind of mold?

Hey everyone,

I live in orange county in southern california. My backyard gets watered regularly in the evening every two days and gets good sun. I noticed the other day, these fungus/mold growing on my grass in three to four different spots. When I pulled them out of the ground, the fungus/mold was very hard and had roots that were really attached to the soil along with red bulbs of some sorts. I have enclosed pictures..

help? what is it? advice?
