Is this a moss or what?

Hello guys,my 2nd post here, been searching a lot of lawn forum on the net and I'm so glad I found this website,I have a problem with my garden and I'm trying all I can to revive it,there is a lot of bare spots, brown area that seems dead and the grass seems to grow slowly,I did a lot of thorough check and I found out that the top soil of the grass has a moss,I don't now what you call this one,if it's really a moss,it is choking the root of the grass that made it hard to grow, can anybody help me what are the treatments and how will I start to rehabilitate my lawn?I appreciate all the help..

Your photo looks like thatch and moss to me. Thatch is where mostly old dead grass roots fill the soil. It can keep grass from growing by starving it for space, air and water. Thatch is often the result of an old lawn or to much fertilizer. I would guess that you need to rent a thatch machine or have some one do it. There are lawn treat ments for moss if you wish to use them. Moss likes acid soil so add lime after you thatch it.

Thanks tomf,I was a bit confuse now becoz after checking all the moss pics on the net, this one on my grass appeared a bit different, they are a bit brownish and is sticking on the roots of the grass thus prevent them from growing,I tried to manually dethatch my lawn this morning but I can't get rid of this thing, the grass is peeling from the soil when I force it,strange...

You have so much thatch you just may pull the grass up with it. Take a photo of your lawn and post it. It may be you will need to kill off your lawn and reseed it, it is hard to tell from here.

You may want to get a PH test kit and check your soil. As I said moss like acid so if you add a bunch of lime after de-thatching it will help.

That is sad because some part of the lawn are doing fine,I want to to a reseeding but I can't find a seed here that is quite similar to a bermuda grass,my wife wants a similar grass, can you guys tell me what seed I would need to make them look like uniform?I tried one seed and spread it on one small part and they look like thin, worst case is,I need to buy sod and lay it which is a more difficult task,I will take some photo of the lawn this coming days, any suggestions are appreciated, thanks.

I get my seed from farm stores and they have better selection of seed. They also sell it in bulk and you can just the amount you need, I have gotten seed in 50lb bags and that save s money over the chain stores.
