Moss Problem

I have a well established, seeded lawn which suffers badly from dense moss growth. I understood that moss growth was caused by poor drainage but when preparing the area, I was advised to use a layer of ash (not ash from burning) beneath the top layer of soil to allow good drainage. I also regularly spike the lawn. I know I can treat the moss to kill it off but can anyone please tell me what is causing the moss to keep returning and is there a way of stopping it? Brian

A lot of different reasons why moss grows. Compacted soil, dampness, little sunlight and a low pH. Correct the problems and the moss should disappear.

Thanks for that. I guess good drainage does not necessarily stop dampness then. I can't therefore stop the damp nor compacted soil without digging it up and the lawn gets plenty of sunlight. Do you know if it is possible to obtain something to increase the pH? Hopefully that might help. Brian

Hello, brian. Go to your local garden store or nursery and get
some lime. Buy the pellets instead of powder because it spreads
much easier. Lime will raise your ph and inhibit the growth of the
moss. Depending on how much rain you get in your area, you might
have to apply the lime a couple times a year. Good luck.
