Help - new home came with no sod, now infested with weeds

I live in Houston TX, I bought my new house last year 2009 and the back yard did not come with sod. My backyard is very big, probably 2-3k square feet. I planted a grass seed mixure last year and got good growth and coverage but after the winter, it died and never came back.

What came back instead was a grassy type weed and a bunch of different other types of weeds grown sporadically around the lawn, most common are the ones that sprout out and have 4 of 5 long blades that just hang in the air. (Pics below)

I have tried planting new grass but I'm afraid my backyard is so overtaken by weeds that it doesn't grow. (Also I believe the seeds are having a hard time getting into the soil since I mow and leave the clippings on the lawn, the very bottom of the lawn is mostly filled with dead clippings, my lawn is much to big to manally try to rake all the seeds in)

I bought weed and feed for my St. Augustine grass in the front but the directions say not to use it for other grass mixtures.

I"m actually ok with the grassy type weed I'm seeing which is covering about 70% of the lawn, I just want to get rid of the other weeds. What options do I have without using a weed killer and just eradicating my entire back yard?
Here are some pics below of what I'm talking about

(Here are the weeds that annoy me the most, they are everywhere in my back yard)

(this is probably about 70% of my back yard, from far away when it's mowed it looks like a normal lawn but I think it's weeds rather than grass, am I right? )

I'm not sure about the second picture, but the first one is nutsedge. I have not used this to prevent this weed, but I have heard good results about Sedgehammer.

Not too sure on this product maybe someone can attest to it's merit. I don't have time to dig too deep right now my kids are being a real pain right now and I gotta go.

But a thin layer of compost and grass seed would get you there. It may take time trust me I fought a few lawns for a long time it's not gonna happen over night without chemicals and the is the worst thing to use in the long run at least as far as I'm am concerned.

A good fertilizer to use is corn gluten that and seed is all I have used this year and I am doing better than my neighbors that don't water every day maybe twice. 8)
