Adjusting Lawn Watering Schedule for Rainfall?

I understand that the watering amount recommendation is 1 inch per week in one application or two (two in my case because the soil is sandy). In terms of rainfall, can I track it, regardless of the amount and time of day that it falls, and subtract that from the weekly recommendation of one inch?

Even if it gets a little dry isn't going to ruin anything, but the lawn will get a little stressed. When that happens, just give it a good drink and it'll jump right back.
