What is doing this to my grass?

My St. Augustine has started turning brown and yellow. It's been going on for about 6 weeks now. It's not those rings of yellow that I often read about. It's just thinning deadness with a few sprigs of green coming through.

Now, I don't get full sun in the backyard. I have my neighbor's fence towering crepe myrtles to thank for that. Hate those! My entire half of the back yard is dirt because of those. But as for the yellowing of the normally healthy and green grass that's in the sun, I'm stumped. I'm frustrated. What could it possibly be?

I will say we've had a lack of rain up until the last few days. But regardless, it's never ever looked like that and we've had droughts far worse.

Does the problem look familiar? I just don't know what to do. I'm desperate.

Thanks so much in advance. I look forward to posting here often.

I'm no expert but it could be grubs. They eat the roots and the blades of grass just turn yellow and die. Good luck.

Nah, grubs leave a scalp; this is just dwindling away...

Could be chinch bugsand they can wipe a lawn out fast. Might be one of those rare instances where I might even use a stronger pesticide...
