I have lots of beautiful black compost and NO access to topsoil. I have a small area (10 X 10) that is full of roots and rocks and I would like to sow some grass seed. I would like to put 6" of compost down and sow seeds to cover up the area for now.
Will grass grow in the compost?

SURE it will...
I think you are going over the top with six inches, but that won't hurt anything; I'd still feel better with two inches instead; that should be more than enough. But that's a GREAT plan, OR... spread your compost, scatter seed, back rake (just using the backside of a lawn rake), and water. You could mulch lightly with straw if bird predation is an issue...
