Put something on top of it? And Ohhhhh did we get the rain! But, is it
Nessesary even with little rain?

It might be. Rain or not, I would cover the seed if it was on a slope, because even water from a hand-held hose or a sprinkler could wash it away. It's possible that there are other reasons to cover it, too, but I'm not sure.
I remember I was always shooing the birds away from the grass seed I sowed a couple of years ago. Keeping the birds from eating it before it has a chance to sprout might be one reason to cover it!
