brown mounds in my grass

OK I recently built a house and had sod placed. It has been very hot this summer and I have been watering as the water restrictions allow and now the grass is starting to take off but, there are areas of brown fine dirt coming up between the sod sections almost like its boiling up. I had the pest guys look at it thinking it was ant mounds but he said he had never seen anything like it. any ideas out there????

Have you seen any insects around them? Seeing ants would be a good sign of an ant moud, seeing cicaidas would be a good sign they're popping out of the ground(they spend years, some species up to 17 years, underground until they emerge to mate and then die). If you're not seeing insects then I suspect a rodent of some sort.
