What is wrong with my lawn?

Hi,

I am new to gardening as I have just bought my first house :)

The grass is my lawn is becoming brawn/yellower every day even though I have been watering it almost every day or two and mowing it every week. I took some pictures of it this morning after mowed it:

the right side of the first picture has some very green grass that is my neighbors (there is no fence between us). I wonder why the grass start becoming brown exactly beginig from the border with neighbors grass?

I appreciate your help
Alex

Without knowing where you live (even within the U.S., there are variations, and this is a worldwide board), I'll make some generalizations:

1) Summer (August in the northern hemisphere) *is* a dormant month for most annual grasses.

2) Mowing "every week" may be stressing your grass. Let it grow to 3" and keep it there. This will have the additional benefit of conserving that precious water you're pouring on the lawn. It may also give the roots a chance to grow deeper into the soil. Deeper roots ==> healthier grass.

3) Make sure the mower blades are sharp.

4) Add compost to your lawn soil before the next watering, and water it in.

Good advice from cynthia. In the meantime what is different between your neighbors' grass and yours? Is theirs a different variety? better established? do they water, fertilize, etc on a different schedule? etc

Thanks for the advice.

we are located in Pacific Northwest (Seattle area). Yes, we have had some hot days (by hot I mean 80+) recently, but I never let the grass go dry.

here is a closer look at the grass. I see some completely yellow blades, and some thoroughly green. can u guess the type of the grass?

The previous owner of the house handed a very long and un-mowed lawn to us, saying that he has recently feed-and-weed the lawn and didn;t want to mow. when we got it (1 month ago) it wasn't perect green, but not as yellow/brown as it is now.

As I am a new homeowner, my mower is also brand new. So I assumed the blade should be in good shape. Although it is an electric one, so shouldn't be that powerful. From its reviews on homedepot website, it seems to be a sound mower.

I have tried to schedule my watering and mowing with my neighbor in the past weeks :) I just also ordered a soil test kit to check the soil. Lets wait and see how it turns out to be.

Thanks
Alex
