New to Forum

Sat May 27, 2017 5:14 am

Greetings from southern Oregon...near Grants Pass.

Discovered this forum doing a search for tomato BERot. Seems to be a lot of friendly and helpful folks here. Some forums are edgy and plain weird. Gardeners are another species, it appears.

I'm 78 y/o male, married for 35 years...and did not find Better Half until I was 40+ Started gardening in 1968 when I moved from S.F. to Sonoma county, CA and rented a cabin on a 500 acre ranch. Owners were in S.F. and came up on weekends. I would do some ranch chores and keep their vegetable garden & landscaping up while they were gone. Later on, I worked in a grape grafting greenhouse....gardener for the city of Napa, CA and lastly as a gardener for the city of S.F.

We moved from Petaluma area to Oregon in 2006 and landed on 2.5 rural acres. Home was built in 1993 and came with mature landscaping. A cold, rainy winter and spring has slowed us down a bit on our box bed veggie garden. Snap peas in the bed about 40-50 days ago...and just now pods are coming.

Thanks for listening....there is a LOT of reading for me to do...and no doubt, some questions and comments...a bit later.

Welcome to the group. Good to see that at age 78 you are still enthusiastic about gardening. Your story about meeting your better half until your 40's could have been written by me. I met my wife when I was 43 after being divorced for a couple years and I too wish I'd have found her many more years ago. I'm now 64 and enjoy good health, so no telling how long I'll keep this up. If I can do this at 78, I'd be tickled pink.

I didn't start making vegetable gardens until the mid 70's when I got my first house and have been gardening pretty much ever since. I've had a few years between where work and life just got too hectic to maintain a garden, but for the most part, ever since the early 90's when I moved into my current home, I've had a large vegetable garden and fairly large flower garden, along with quite a few potted plants on my 2 porches and patio.

You're right, there is a lot to read on this forum and the good thing is, there is also a lot of very valuable information that is exchanged by its members. Good to have another avid gardener in our midst, especially one with your background.
