splitting hydrangeas

I work at a golf course that has beautiful full grown hydrangeas can u spilt off parts of those plants and re plant them? I just bought one recently and planted it had a few issues but it seems to be doing ok now, would love to have more just wondered if they are kinda like hostas where u can split them and grow more? thanks

Hydrangeas are woodsy shrubs and woodsy shrubs do not multiply well by dividing them, meaning cutting the crown in half, thirds, etc. Although I know of many people who have done this successfully, I suggest instead propagating by cuttings or by ground layering. Propagating by cuttings definitely produces more plants. Keep in mind too that some varities are patented though.
