Thanks all, bought some herb seeds and some annual plant seeds today.
How do I take a cutting from a hydrangea/similar shrub?

You can take cuttings during late spring/early summer. Keep the top 4 (or so) leaves of a stem and remove the rest. Cut just below a node at the lower end of the stem. The stem length can vary; about 4" or more is about right. Add some medium grade planting hormone containing indolebutyric acid to the base of the stem, pot it and keep it moist.
