how much pruning can hydrangea take?

my bigleaf hydrangea in pot had nice flowers and its color's fading now. they are like 3 feet tall and 2 years old. It is about time to deadhead and prune back time! but how far down I can prune canes? how much pruning does Hydrandea can take? the place the pot is right now doens't have much space, so I want to keep it compact if possible.

Also my other hydrangea in small pot need repotting. Fall is good time to do?

Did you try googling: "Pruning Hydrangeas"?

It should be fine, my mother used to prune her hydrangea back to almost nothing and it came back every year. Though, I'm sure that is not what you are supposed to do.

If I think to, I will ask my old neighbour this weekend as he is a very experienced gardener.
