All hydrangeas panicles are made up of large showy flowers and small less conspicuous ones. I used to think that they were male and female, as the small ones are those that produce seed, but was reading about them the other day and found that both have the same reproductive parts. It may be that more large flowers will open in upcoming days. Do you know what variety it is? (You said "tree", so that makes me think it's a p.g.)

Thanks Microcollie.. I was at the nursery tonight and saw that their p.g. hydrangeas had the same "problem" Hence - I asked. The "spikes" are the part that the bees pollinate and have great fragrance; the sepals do fill in separately and mostly cover the "spikes".
Worried for nothing... But the bug, hope he's a good guy..
