If it just looks a little less than full, you may need to trim it in places to encourage it to fill out. When to trim, and how much to trim, depends on the variety. You can trim Endless Summer anytime. Others bloom on old growth, so you need to keep more of that or else you lose your bloom. Do the current homeowners know what kind of hydrangea they are?

The clay isn't a problem, they grow here pretty well and happily.

If you want to keep them as blue, you are going to want to play around with the pH of your soil. I think that slightly basic is blue but, don't quote me on that.

Oh, yes, trim it anytime. And Opa is right, so if the blooms are not blue as you like, change the PH of your soil. :)
