Please Help

My neighbour has a 10 year old Hydrangea, which began to show disease through brown patches, this then developed into small white, spongey lumps on the underside of the leaves. The leaves are under developed and the plant is wilting.
Please help! :)

Sounds like hydrangea leaf roller. Are the spongy lumps cocoons? Rip one open to find out. If so you need a systemic insecticide like Orthene, but let me know first...

Orthene you should be able to get at any decent garden center; just follow manufacturer's recommendations, and yes, any time of year the plant is alive is okay...
