Bitter Basil

Hi All,

I currently have (a ton of) basil plants growing in various pots. The basil is thriving - growing very big. Some plants have begun to flower, but I have pinched the flowers off.

Recently, my basil has begun to taste very bitter - almost inedible.

Can anyone suggest why, and, if anything, what I may do? Does it have anything to do with the basil flowering?

Thanks,

Tom

Well...I read in a book The Little Herb Garden that basil is most pungent when it flowers.

However, this should increase the basil flavor, not make it bitter or inedible.

Could it be that the leaves you are picking are the oldest of the old? Try picking any litttle baby leaves and see if you taste a difference

Also, your climate (unless you are in a mediterranean climate like italy or california) could effect the taste.

And the cultivar could be a bad one- or it could be diseased.

How often is it watered? How much? How tall is it? What variety is it?

Please provide more details to kpoint us in the right direction.
