Coriander seed

Hi all, I am a novice gardener, Can I grow coriander (cilantro) from seed bought from the food market? seed from the garden center is so expensive and such a small packet! I can get a few kilos of seed for the same price, but don't know if food bought seed is fertile or if it has been cooked first. Any info would be a great help thanks.

If you puchase the coriander that you buy in the market, it will most likely not grow into a plant. You can buy seed from a nursery that will definately germinate probably for less money than it cost to buy a jar of seed at the supermarket.

I would test the seed by soaking it overnight and then "sprouting" it as if you were making salad sprouts.

If/when the seeds sprout, that would be the time to put them in the ground.
