What does the underside of the leaf look like?

If the underside feels "oily" , look for signs of basil downy mildew. Usually the leaves yellow between the veins before the spores become visible. It is unusual to see the leaves look smudged with black first. Sweet basil is the most susceptible.

That looks similar to my basil last year. I just plucked off the diseased leaves and the rest were fine. I'm not sure if its the same thing or not...or even if I did the right thing.

I have no idea if the soil is bad..and I'm doing away with basil this year and putting strawberries in its place.
