question about basil

I have two 6 inch clay pots with basil in it. I was wondering if I need to move them to bigger pots because one has 4 plants in it and the other has 5. I also wonder how big of a pot I would need to move it into with the amount of plants in them

You can grow stunted plants in a small pot, but for larger full sized plants size the pots up. I grow even a single plant in three gallon nursery pots. Such a plant will get 18-24 inches tall and maybe a foot wide. Don't size up all at once however. Move the plants to 1 gallon, and then maybe a month later move the plants to 2-3 gallon containers. I never leave more than two plants in a container, so will either snip or separate the extra plants in a group.

So move the plants to a bigger container or separate them into 9 1 gallon pots?

Yes 4 basil plants in a 6" pot is WAY too many. In fact as alex said the 6" pot is not big enough for one basil plant. But you probably could grow one puny, stunted basil in it. But the 4 will likely just kill each other off. Or all remain tiny and do nothing.

how big of a pot would I have to move them all to keep them together because I have limited space. and also would I have to split them all up to one in each pot. I don't have enough room for 9 gallon pots of basil to grow so what is the best idea to grow it without killing some of the plants.

My suggestion is for 4 in 1 pot, 12" smallest. I put 3 in a 10", 4 in 12". They don't get wildly huge of course, but then I am harvesting on a regular basil.

    Hope this helps.
